Blogging about Portland … and what fashion?

I’m not a “negative” blogger – I try not to make fun of people’s wardrobe choices, some of mine are pretty funny too!
I also feel uneasy about giving fashion advice. It guilts me, because everyone should dress however the heck they want. I wouldn’t want anyone to tell me to wear something this way, or that way …

But this blog is obvious NOT for everyone. So I’m thinking thinking thinking … would you all be interested in reading if I started a blog “feature” titled something like, “HOW NOT TO DRESS LIKE A PORTLANDER?”

Reason being is that there are actually SO many great places to shop in Portland. And all of these places are making an effort to allow you to become aware of styles and choices that are out there – outside of the malls, outside of Portland. They’re buying from New York, LA, Paris, Italy, etc. and they want to provide you with sensible fashion choices. So WHY aren’t you shopping there or inspired by things that they carry?

Sometimes people on the streets ask me, “Are you from Portland?” And when they hear my reply I get an expected response … “You don’t dress like a Portlander.” Well, it’s simply a matter of not wearing windbreakers to dinner or carrying vinyl laptop bags with felt appliques, as your purse — NOTHING wrong with it, but it’s an APPARENT Portland thing – you see it all the time.

I may be rambling, but I guess my point is … don’t let yourself be DEFINED by the general way people dress in your city. If it’s NY or a major fashion capital, then SURE! Go ahead and dress like the best of the best. But if you consider yourself to be a fashion influential or aspire to be one .. do you really want for people to tell you, “You dress like you’re going camping ..”

So go ahead, eat like a Portlander, be laid-back like a Portland, love your pets like a Portlander, go on adventures and go listen to music and rock out like a Portland. But I don’t know if I’ll ever want to dress like a Portlander. If you are truly interested in fashion, in style, then become knowledgeable about what’s out there, what people are showcasing … and turn people’s reactions from “You don’t look … ” into just simply, “You look nice.”

Domi + I

My CRAVE Portland team got together with my friend and fab photographer, Bunn Salarzon for a photo shoot. She was so kind as to reach out to us and ask, “Where the heck are the CRAVE team’s photos?” haha So we did a “Sex and the City” inspired theme and it was a blast!

I actually have yet to see all the photos from the shoot, you can check more of them here. But below are my favorites because they are Domino and I’s first professional shoot together!

You can also check out a few photos from the Up In the Air summer fashion show here!

A summer affair.

There are lots and lots of events, many of them fashion-related in Portland. You’ll realize this the more involved you are in that “arena” here. In addition, there is a copious amount of retail stores and boutiques in Portland who collaborate and team up with one another to produce these fun affairs. These are wise endeavors indeed as they allow these businesses to directly connect with their customers and fans. And instead of spending tons of advertising dollars in the local paper or TV station, what small budget you have could go a long ways if you can connect with the right partners, sponsors .. and people in general.

In light of that I kind of reflected on what my blog has turned into … almost like a scrapbook of photos and memories from the events that I’ve attended. The launch parties, the charity benefits, the art shows, the fashion shows. Please be aware that there will be less written content, but more random photo postings of maybe even a week’s worth of adventures in my shoes. At the same time, I don’t guarantee high quality photos but WHATEVER photos I can scavenge.

And in my head I really want a nice camera–maybe even a photographer I can keep in my pocket … but when you’re on the fly or carrying a clutch to an event, it’s kind of hard to lug around a camera. It would also be awesome to have a flip cam to start doing vlogs. Hopefully I get on it soon because that’s where the future of blogging lies. Or is it already there?!!!

Nonetheless, I’m thinking about all of you out there. And I’ll try to post about events BEFORE they happen so you can attend too. So on that note, check out this upcoming fashion show … keyword: open bar.

Something for you to think about over the July 4th weekend. But don’t contemplate for too long, it’s must go indefinitely! Open bar, raffles, a fashion show with some of the best boutiques in town, vendor booths w/amazing indie artists and designers. And 100% of proceeds will benefit Willamette Riverkeeper. AMAZING! You MUST register, so go here.

From ‘Breath of Portland’ Fashion Show

Modelings hanging out backstage, fitting, getting hair & make-up done, getting ready for the fashion show. Designers Janeane Marie, Dawn Sharp, and Kate Spade NY. I modeled one look for Dawn Sharp – a teeny “bunny” swimsuit with bright yellow cover-up and a beautiful knit dress with geometric detailing from Janeane Marie (see below).

My beautiful friends.

Two of the coolest guys in Portland.

This was the “smokey panda” look.

Post-funkin’ on the bridge going downtown at the end of the night. The bridge was up, so we decided to have a mini photo sesh. Please stay tuned for the next set of adventures!

Are we following each other on Twitter? Do you live in the Portland area? Portland has so many wonderful events and fashion shows. I’ll tweet about them on Twitter every so often! Let me know of any you’ll be attending too.
